Uttarkashi flashflood LIVE: Flash floods in Uttarakhand leave four dead; over 60 feared trapped
Many feared washed away after water from Kheer Ganga river swept through Dharali in Uttarkashi district; heavy losses of life and property feared;
At least four persons were killed and dozens feared washed away in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand after flash floods triggered by torrential rain hit the Kheer Ganga river on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) afternoon.
The floods hit hotels and residential buildings in Dharali town, situated 8,600 feet above sea level, where video footage recorded by residents showed giant waves of water gushing through the area and swallowing everything in their way, including people and homes.

Residents were heard yelling warnings to their acquaintances to run for their lives. The entire market area of the popular tourist town was washed away in minutes, leaving the place looking like a sludge-filled river bed.
At least 25 establishments, including hotels, guest houses, and homes were completely destroyed. A rough estimate by the district administration says that around 60-70 people are missing or might be trapped in the area.
Indian Army deploys 150 personnel, drones, helicopters for rescue in Uttarkashi
The Indian Army has deployed 150 personnel, led by Colonel Harshvardhan, Commanding Officer of 14 RAJRIF, in rescue and relief operations amid a mudslide in Harsil in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi.
Army tracker dogs, drones and earthmoving equipment have been deployed for evacuation and providing essential supplies since Tuesday.
Rescuers resume search for missing people in flood-hit Dharali village
Heavy rain continued to pound Uttarkashi as rescuers resumed their operations on Wednesday in Dharali, searching for flash flood victims amid the rubble.
Nearly half of the picturesque Dharali village was ravaged by the flash flood on Tuesday afternoon.
The village is the main stopover on the way to Gangotri, from where the Ganga originates Four deaths have so far been confirmed in the flash flood, which followed a cloudburst. Around 130 people have been evacuated to safety.
Not a single body has yet been retrieved from the rubble.
The Indian Army has deployed its MI-17 and Chinook helicopters to look for the stranded.
“Unfortunate incident, roads blocked in some places”: BJP MP
Bharatiya Janata Party’s Tehri Garhwal MP, Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah, on Tuesday informed that roads are blocked in some places and rescue teams are on their way after a cloudburst triggered devastating flash floods in the Harsil area of Uttarkashi district,
“This incident is even bigger than the one which took place in 2013. Help from the centre and the state is being sent. Rescue teams are also on the way, but it is taking time because the roads are blocked in some places, it is an unfortunate incident,” the BJP MP told ANI.
Meanwhile, the BJP Hardwar MP, Trivendra Singh termed it as a “tragic” incident
“It’s a tragic incident; the visuals that we saw are horrifying. There is an expectation of major loss, but it could have been worse. A fair was held near the Dharali village, which attracted many people, and as a result, many were able to save their lives. We still don’t know the death toll, The NDRF team has gone there, and the SDRF team has already reached there
