Nagesh Kumar, one of the three new external members of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), said that the slowdown in GDP growth during Q2FY2025 was transient and the economy is likely to a pick-up in the second half of the current fiscal. Kumar, who voted for a 25 basis points (bps) cut in the repo rate in the last two consecutive monetary policies, told Hitesh Vyas and George Mathew that a rate cut would revive economic growth without worsening the inflationary situation. If the RBI does not follow the process of normalisation when most other central banks have moved forward, it runs the risk of currency appreciation, said Kumar, who is Director and Chief Executive of the Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID).
